about

This is a FREE compilation, created out of love and respect for Bowie and his collaborators.

"This is a very strong, unique and most importantly a heartfelt tribute to the late and great David Bowie. The bands/ artists all bring something original to their tracks and don't merely play it safe. This is what Bowie did with his covers, he made them his own and it is what he would have appreciated to have happen with his music." - Sean Palfrey, Intravenous Magazine
www.intravenousmag.co.uk/2016/07/review-various-artists-unsound-americans.html?m=1

On January 10th of 2016, David Bowie -- music and fashion icon, purveyor of the weird, wild, and new -- passed away after a fight with cancer.

Bowie's music has spread around the world and reached into the hearts of millions of listeners. His music inspired, uplifted, challenged and seduced us. He created generations of new songwriters, producers, singers and other artists in his image.

I am one of them.

I first fell in love with Bowie's album 1.Outside a few short years after it had been released and had been panned by his audience and critics alike. I found it to be a powerful, immersive concept album that broke rules; it was confusing as hell -- and full of magic, studded with hidden gems.

On the day Bowie died, I sat down at the piano and taught myself to play the last song from 1.Outside, "Strangers When We Meet." Not being Mike Garson, I could only really play the chords -- and I found myself adapting the song anew, finding my own voice inside it.

I was reminded of all those intimate life moments I experienced to a soundtrack of Bowie's music -- love and heartbreak, exhilaration and rage, fear and awe. My whole life, Bowie's music has been there. And I realized that I had many friends with whom I shared a bond -- a love for this music and the creative, spiritual entity behind it. That is how this tribute was born.

This compilation features my friends, over a dozen of them, who gave their time, energy, and passion to produce 16 covers with me for this tribute specifically. Some are professional, veteran singer/songwriters -- and others rarely record or perform at all. However, each of us had a favorite Bowie song, and we all worked tirelessly to honor the music and man in this pursuit.

We each found our own voice in this music. As producer, this was a profound and almost supernatural thing to experience.

Bowie was no saint. He likely wasn't an alien. And we know he was not immortal. But don't let any of these things distract from the inimitable, awesome cultural force he represents -- still -- from the 20th century into the 21st. He gave us new tools of self-expression. He gave us new lenses through which to examine the world. He gave us new insights into the heart and mind -- timeless and precious in their quality.

He is dearly missed.
